Prof. Karel Patras was a noteworthy Czech harpist and teacher of the 20th century. He studied the harp at the State conservatory and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague.As a student of the Conservatory, he was engaged in the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra as a second harpist, working along side Bedřich Dobrodinský. After Dobrodinský’s departure, Patras was promoted to the position of the first harpist. He played there from 1945 to 1985.Patras‘ career as a professor started in 1959 at the State Conservatory where he remained until 1973. In addition, Patras was also a professor at the Music Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (1960-1999), where he shaped many excellent female harpists. For example, Renata Kodadová (Czech Philharmonic), Magdalena Spitzerová – Šimečková (Prague Symphony Orchestra), Dagmar Platilová (Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra), Milena Jílková (Brno Philharmonic) and many others that established themselves as soloists on concert stages as well as orchestral players.
